Dear Reader-
Last week we had our yearly inspection with the state of Oregon. I was given around a half-dozen mundane tasks to complete before we can renew the license that powers Space Psychedelic Clinic. The tasks included such critical items such as: get a lock for a cabinet. Add a column to a google document that tracks personnel. Move a ladder to the basement.
I expect to pass. I think the more important news is that our scrappy little business has hit the one year mark.
We are close to seeing our 300th client!
I thought I’d write a post about 5 things that have changed since our opening last year. I am the employee and the owner here. I change things routinely based on what I see and feel. Because of this some of the changes are high-level business items and some are operational and affect what clients experience.
- We Are Booked Often. While I acquired our license in February 2024, we didn’t start seeing clients until April. I’d say it really picked up steam in the winter, and now we’re chugging along quite consistently. We see 40-50 clients a month. We’re open seven days a week, so people are able to book whatever they want- that’s really helpful for out of town folks. I don’t have any official numbers or anything but I’d be kind of shocked if another service center was doing what we’re doing. They’ve just priced themselves out of contention.
- I’m Exclusively Employed at Space. Space is a dream come true! I always joke that I named it because of all the Space in my life I have now that I’m not practicing medicine. Haha! I have stopped working all other jobs to focus on the business. This quarter we’ve done really well and Space is feeling like a real career and not just a weird hobby.
- More focus on the Journey, Less Focus on the Medication. At the beginning I put way too much confidence in the mushrooms. I thought that as long as a client ate mushrooms, good things would happen. That was my bias as a lifelong psychedelic user coming through. Now I put a lot more emphasis on preparation and integration. I generally have the luxury of talking to everyone a few times before they end up here at Space. I want people to think about their feelings really closely leading up to a session, and I want them to create a plan for themselves with integration.
- Integrate Everyone. Speaking of integration…State law does not mandate integration after a psychedelic experience. They mandate an attempt at offering integration. Haha! I send everyone an email with integration activities, as well as an invitation to talk. I also text everyone. I do think it’s good for the clients and the business, but it’s also been really important for my own personal journey as a human person in this world. Connecting with people after their journeys is profoundly beautiful. It has made me a better man.
- Diverse Workforce and Clients. It was really important for me to provide jobs to diverse personnel. When it comes to choosing a facilitator, a lot of people are looking for someone whose experiences mirror their own. Having a diverse staff lets you work with a diverse population. Also, everyone at Space is down with our lower price point. That means we can work with clients that cannot be served at other service centers.
We have something really special going on, I’ll talk about it all day.
